This has not been a good season for the referees as in almost every country, there seems to be widespread criticisms of their performances.
Over the weekend in the England, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was very scathing of the performance of the referee in the game against Portsmouth as he felt too many decisions went against his team and it was reported that he complained to the designator, Keith Hackett that this brand of young referees are not just good enough.
It was alleged that FIFA president agreed that the standard of refereeing in the premiership is the worst in Europe, which may come as the Italians that feel that they have most inept referees in the world.
Last week referee designator in Italy Pierluigi Collina was sent a bullet through the post by irate fans that feel that their teams have been at the wrong end of dodgy decisions this season.
They have even taken it further than just mere incompetence, some fans, players and even members of the club board especially Juventus fans feel they are still being punished for their role in the Calciopoli football scandal that rocked Italian football 2 years ago.
Many of the fans, managers and some players feel that Inter Milan have been given preferential treatment as they have been awarded lots of penalties this season, a lot of which have been dubious.
The fans feel that whenever Inter Milan is struggling in a game, the officials have tended to award them a phantom penalty just to aid their cause. Some like disgraced former Juventus Team Manager, Luciano Moggi claim that Inter Milan are doing exactly what he was accused of doing which is influencing referees unfairly.
Just on Saturday Inter Milan were awarded a penalty against Reggina but according to Reginna President, Lillo Foti, the foul was outside the box and it was just the referee's birthday present to Inter Milan as they were celebrating their centenary on that particular day.
In Spain it is the same old story with blatant decisions being either ignored or missed completely by both the referee and his assistants.
2 weeks ago in the match between Real Zaragoza and Barcelona, Juanfran clearly controlled the ball with his chest but quite astonishingly the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty that enabled Barcelona to come away with a win and in some way costing Real manager his job.
Lots and lots of players and managers have been left scratching their heads in astonishment as to how some referees have come by some of their decisions. Sunderland might be relegated this season with some of the decisions that have gone against them. Too many dubious disallowed goals against them and just yesterday against Everton, Andy Johnson appeared to score with the aid of his elbow.
It has been quite a difficult season for referees with play acting by players not looking like something that the powers that be are addressing, making their job that much harder.
